Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2013

Once again, Dolce and Gabbana took inspiration from Domenico Dolce’s birth place – Sicily. The Sicilian inspired collection was a riot of bold colors , vintage prints and voluminous silhouette. As mentioned by Domenico, the collection was an idea of glamorous holidays in Sicily.

The feel good summery collection featured dresses made of raffia sacks, silk, parasol striped dresses, Caltagirone and street – theater puppets prints accessorized with colorful and dangling chandelier ear rings (includes the controversial caricature of a black woman which is termed as racist as the ear rings are identical to Blackamoor* statues), bags, souvenir head scarves and sculpted wooden wedges with flowers in their heels. I particularly liked the bamboo cane corsets and the full crinoline skirt, worn under a transparent black organza.

The collection definitely screams attention however I felt the silhouette, prints and patterns were reminiscent of their previous Sicilian inspired collections. It is high time, the talented designer duo explores other places for inspiration in this ever changing, competitive and unpredictable world of fashion.  

*Blackamoor - Blackamoor figures (Italian moretto, moretti) are depictions of black Africans used in sculpture, jewelry, armorial designs and decorative art. The imagery is reminiscent of the slave era.
